What Do You Mean Don't Put It There?

What Do You Mean Don't Put It There?
by Heather Colman

Your cover is finished, looks terrific and you're just itching to get it on your webpage. Whoa Haus! Lets take a deep breath and look at this for a moment. The question to consider is... Is it really important how you display it? The answer is YES! It's extremely important.

I won't argue with the marketing guru's on the most profitable position on the page to display your cover. Most everyone, including Google, seems to be in agreement that the upper left-hand corner, above the first fold, is the first place people look. I'm told it's the best place to put your most important content and so far it's worked for me.

There are a lot of theories about this, but I won't go into that here. Lets just assume this is a true statement for the time being. You can do your own research to learn more about this topic.

What's just as important is where you place your cover in conjunction with your ad copy. The fact is, placing your cover on the wrong side of your ad copy will lead your prospective customer right past your copy without even reading it. No Cha-ching here!

Example - WRONG PLACEMENT

Lets assume you are going to place your ad copy here.
RESULT:
Notice how your eye naturally travels to the right side of the page.

It's the law of nature. The eye naturally travels the same direction the cover is facing. Therefore, for optimum results, your cover should be positioned in such a way that it FACES the ad copy that promotes it.

Your cover is a tool that should be used to help you sell more, among other things, but not used in a way that draws your potential customers away from the important things you have to say. Use it properly and it will help increase your sales.

A good rule of thumb to remember is... If your cover faces to the right, it should be placed on the left side of your copy. (see illustration 2) If your cover faces to the left, it should be placed on the right side of the copy. (see illustration 3)
